Jessica Watson - Protect our Oceans

Jessica has revealed yet another of her very endearing qualities. Whether she realised it or not, as she penned her latest post, she is in a position of advocacy and has sent out a strong message on the importance of thinking before throwing in order to protect our oceans.

Most of our waste today is comprised of plastic. Made from petroleum, plastic is a material that our planet cannot digest. Every bit of plastic that has ever been created still exists, except for a small amount that has been incinerated, releasing toxic chemicals.

In the ocean, plastic waste accumulates in swirling seas of debris. Plastic to sea life ratios now stand at 6:1. Birds and mammals are dying of starvation and dehydration with bellies full of plastics. Fish are ingesting toxins at such a rate that soon they will no longer be safe to eat.

What can we do about it? First, we need to understand and comprehend the size of the problem. Then together we need to find the solutions. Every little bit helps and it has to start with each and every one of us making a conscious effort to simply think before we throw.

    Hi, Sam!

Another great creation, and with an important message about protecting our beautiful oceans! I'm sure this will reach a lot of recreational sailor's, and, hopefully, commercial ship's crews, with a great reminder!!

I'm really missing Jessica's blogs. It had me worried at first, but I guess it's just that they're changing over to a "New Home" for her blog site.
It's hard not knowing what she's going through, as I'd heard that there was another storm coming through!

I guess this is going to be what it's like once she's completed her voyage, and we're all going through withdrawal. I'm hoping that the blog site can stay open, and that she'll write on it occasionally, letting us know what she's doing, and that her blog "family" can still post messages. Keep up the good work!!!

Bye for now! ("Hi" to Faye and Max)

  2. Hi Sam

A great message from Jessica that you have captured well, just go out on any pier, jetty or breakwater and see the plastic and fishing line (and bottles) just left lying around.
We were a bit confused with Jessica's new look blog but Carol (thanks Carol) has explained it in her comment.
    Must away

Cheers from Faye and Max (Mulgrave Vic)

    Hi Samurai,
I thought that was a very good poster with a strong message. Trash thrown into the water here quickly disappears, but as someone had mentioned in a post awhile back that the area of trash in a zone where the currents come together is as large as the State of Texas. There was also a time when different states would load their trash on barges and dump it in the ocean many miles out. New York was a bib offender of this and I believe it was finally stopped. Attitude is: Out of sight out of mind!!!!
Nice job Sam, ya know, I’m really feeling pretty good, ha hahaaaa.

    Cheers,
    Michael

  4. Dear Sam

Thank you for installing the comments moderator to your site, now we won’t have to put up with the kind of abuse that your site has endured in recent times. It is unfortunate that you have had to do this, but indeed very necessary.

You know Sam, some people think it is their given rite to visit some one else’s blog and use profanities and insults. This amounts to a total lack of respect for not only the blog owner, but those that follow and read the comments. It is like visiting some one’s home, weeing in their pool, and expecting to be invited back again.

It is interesting that your latest graphic refers to the environment, because people who show a lack of respect towards others, would be the very people that would throw their plastic bags into waterways, or leave their rubbish lying around, and just wouldn’t care about the consequences to the marine life or the environment.

    Cheers for now

  5. G'day Sam,

Thanks for making it possible to post using the anonymous selection. I appreciate that.

I've so enjoyed your pictures, they're fun and I'm sure Jessica gets a real kick out of them, or will do when/if you compile a book and present it to her.

I agree with what Faye and Max have posted, and thought those insulting posts were uncalled for.
I have my opinions on people such as those, but will refrain from expressing my disdain here.

I guess we, as a defence family, and myself a retired nurse, see the world through different eyes.

Keep up the good work, Sam!

    Regards,

  6. Hi Sam,
Looks like I was the only one enjoying ♣Howdy's 'dumb' trash talk, lol (not really).

Jessica seems to be following Ian kiernan's path towards 'Clean up Australia' and then Australian of the year.

Keep it up, Hoo roo ☺☺☺
